Convert FAT or FAT32 to NTFS Without Formatting or Losing Data

If you are using windows operating system on your PC, then definitely you need to Convert FAT or FAT32 to NTFS Without Formatting or Losing Data. So here in this tutorial I’ll explain how? But first of all we must understand clearly what are these formats and why the need of conversion from FAT 32 to NTFS format?

What is FAT (File Allocation Table)

It’s type of data structure which is created by windows whenever you format your external drive. It offers good performance even in light-weight implementations, but cannot deliver the same performance, reliability and scalability as some modern file systems. And other drawback is it can not handle files more than size of 4GB, means it works fine for small files.

What is NTFS (New Technology File Sharing System)

NTFS has several technical improvements over FAT, like it works perfectly with large files(more than 4GB). NTFS is an advanced and improved file system which is used bylatest windows operating system. It is reliable, secure, lesserdefragmentation time, consistent andhighly performance file system.

By above descriptions, now it’s clear that you should use NTFS file system otherwise you may face “Not enough disk space error“. So for converting Fat 32 to NTFS, follow the below steps.
Note: Before converting it is recommended that you back up the data.

Steps:

1. Goto start button open run
2. Type CMD and hit enter.
3. Type command “chkdsk d: /f “ without any quotes, where d is the drive which you are going to convert.  This checks the drive for errors and fixes them automatically.
4. Now run the command “Convert D: /FS:NTFS” without any quotes. D is the drive to be converted. After few seconds you’ll get a message of successfully conversion of your drive.
5. For confirmation you can check it through drive’s property.

Attention: 
This method cannot convert NTFS to FAT. In order to convert back into FAT just format the drive.

This method is the perfect and working method to convert FAT or FAT32 to NTFS Without Formatting or Losing Data. Just enter the commands carefully. It works great in windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista. You can also convert any external drive like hard drive/pen drive.
